About COLMAN’S 

Nestled into the heart of Melbourne’s antique district is our Malvern Road store front. Here is where we offer unique, antique, refurbished, and modern timepieces for sale, and assess clocks and watches for service.  We have a variety of watchbands in stock and batteries for nearly any kind of quartz watch. The clockmaker is often on-site at the store front, you may enquire and ask him any timepiece related question you wish.

Michael Colman owner and Horologist at Colman’s Watch & Clockmakers.

I started my apprenticeship in January 1973 in Wanganui, New Zealand which took 5-½ years to complete and covered Watch & Clockmaking. During that period the workshop employed 4 working Horologists and an engraver. When I started my apprenticeship there were 7 journeyman and 3 apprentices in a city of 32,000 people, today 30 years on there are only 2 full time journeymen.

I present on our industry to groups such as the Horological Guild, the Antiquarian Horological Society, the Antique Dealers Association in conjunction with the Council of Adult Education, the Johnston Collection (part of the Australian National Trust), RMIT University, Model Engineers groups, Library’s and to the odd School room whenever one of my children volunteer my services.

As an authority in this field I have also written several pieces for the industry and antique magazines, the most recent being on the History of Time Part 1 & 2 and part 3 which will be published soon. I have also organised several Horological exhibitions in the Ballroom at The Mansion at Werribee for Members to display collectables in Clocks, Watches & Tools.
